History Of the Italian Bolognese: This breed belonging to the family of Small Companion Breeds originating from the Mediterranean (Italy): Along with the Bolognese, Bolonka Franszuska, Maltese, Havanses, Bichon Frise, Coton De Tulear & the LowChen all belonging to this Family.
The Bolognese is an Ancient breed going back to Roman Times, the 11th & 12th Century. The very Elite Ladies of Italy declared this little dog as their Favorite, & the dog was Mandatory; "Fashion Accessories." The Bolognese was spoiled, perfumed & powdered and their coats were trimmed according to the lastest fashions. The little dogs were given so much attention the French verb; "Bichonner," means: "To Pamper" which helped give the original name "Bichon Bolognais," & now known as Bolognese, Italian Bolognese, or Italian Renaissance Bolognese. During the Middle Age it was the Companion of the Aristocracy of Italy. It was the breeed in Bologna, Italy & adored for its very Affectionate & Loving Personality. In the name of diplomacy these dogs were given to other heads of State in Europe. Maria Sophia of Austria Loved her Bolognese so very much, that she had it stuffed after it passed on. Many of these Bolognese went to Belgium during the 1600's as gifts to the Nobility & Wealthy influentail Merchants. Even the Czar Czarina of Russia had a Bolognese. During the Russain Revolution the servents of Nobility saved the dogs from the destruction of the revolution, & Russia is the basis for the Bolognese today. The Bolognese traces its ancestry back to the 11th Century. It was the very Favorite of the Wealthy & Elite of Renaissance Italy.
